Tyre Age Calculator
Rule of thumb: check tyres over 6 years regularly and replace after 10 – rubber ages even with good tread.
Calculate tyre age – decode the DOT number
The tyre age calculator instantly tells you when your tyre was made. Enter the 4-digit DOT code from the sidewall to see the production week, year, age and whether the tyre is still safe.
How to read the DOT number
- The DOT code is on the tyre sidewall, often inside an oval frame.
- Only the last 4 digits are the date: first 2 = production week, last 2 = year.
- Example: 3619 means week 36 of 2019.
Why tyre age matters
Rubber ages even without use: plasticisers escape, the tyre hardens and loses grip – regardless of tread depth. Check tyres from 6 years old regularly and replace them after 10 years, even if the tread still looks fine.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the DOT number?
On the tyre sidewall, usually in an oval field at the end of the marking. Only the last four digits count.
How old can a tyre be?
As a spare up to about 6 years; in use, check from 6 years and replace after 10 years at the latest.
Does this apply to new tyres too?
Yes – unused stock tyres age as well. When buying, make sure the DOT isn't already several years old.
Is there a legal age limit for tyres?
There is no legal age limit for passenger-car tyres in Germany or the EU – only the minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm is mandatory. However, ADAC, TÜV and manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after 10 years at the latest.
How do I read a 3-digit DOT number (pre-2000)?
Tyres made before 2000 carry only 3 digits – e.g. 408 = week 40 of 1998. Such tyres are over 25 years old and should be replaced in any case.
Does tyre age matter for the roadworthiness test?
Age alone is not an automatic defect – the condition is checked (tread depth, cracks, hardening). Old tyres, however, often fail precisely because of these.
Tyre too old or damaged? Keep an original tyre repair kit in the boot for emergencies.
