How it works

A jack only lifts one corner of the car, so it never carries the full weight – but for safety you should still choose a capacity that exceeds the vehicle's weight. Cars usually manage with 2 t, SUVs and vans need 3 t.
Frequently asked questions
How many tonnes does my jack need?
It depends on the vehicle weight: ordinary cars usually manage with 2 t, while heavy saloons, SUVs and vans need 3 t. When in doubt, pick the next size up.
Which jack for an SUV?
SUVs and off-roaders often weigh over 2 tonnes – a 3 t jack is sensible here, ideally a hydraulic trolley jack with a large lift height.
Scissor or hydraulic jack?
The scissor jack is the light on-board tool for emergencies. For frequent use, hydraulic trolley jacks are more stable and lift higher.
Where do I place the jack?
Only at the jacking points marked in the manual on the sill – never on the floor pan, the axle or the tank.
