Buying guide: open rails, closed rails or fixing points?

The rail type decides the part. With open rails you can push your hand between roof and rail – that is the case on the VW Taigo, where the carrier wraps around the profile. With closed rails the bar sits flush on the roof, as on the Kia Niro DE, and the base carrier locates on defined points. Roofs without rails have fixing points under small covers instead, or a plain door frame – the carriers listed here are not designed for those. Also check the roof load stated in your owner's manual: it includes the weight of the carrier and is usually the tighter limit once bikes or a loaded roof box are on top. Plan base and attachment together – the base carrier first, then bike carrier, ski holder or box.
